Yummy Eats at the Good Shepherd Store

A visit to the country’ Summer Capital, Baguio City, is never complete without a short stop to Good Shepherd Sister’s place to buy all the good stuff. From purple jam, peanut brittle to strawberry jam goodies, Baguio visitors flock to this little store to buy their pasalubongs or take-home presents for their loved ones back home. So, evidently, with Tagaytay being second to Baguio as the country’s summer capital, it wasn’t long until the store opened a sister shop of the famous Good Shepherd Store in Tagaytay City.

Closer to Manila, the Good Shepherd Sister’s Store, also known locally as the Bahay Pastulan, offers the same yummy pasalubongs as their original counterpart. Located in Maryridge in Tagaytay City, visitors flock there for their share of ube jam or purple jam, ube dimples, and Tagaytay’s famous tawilis in olive oil. Tawilis are fresh water sardines that are prevalent and can only be found in the Taal Lake.

The original Good Shepherd Convent in Baguio City is located along Gibraltar Road in the Mines View Baranggay just a short walking distance from the famous Mines View Park. Their well-loved items include fruit preserves, strawberry jam, peanut and cashew brittle and coco jam. All items sold at Good Shepherd are actually a product of the hard work and passion of the nuns in the convent. Money generated from the sale of their products is used for the different charities sponsored by the Good Shepherd nuns. Profits are also used for the maintenance and upkeep of the famous covenant. The hard-working nuns not only became popular with producing such yummy eats but also for their care and passion of helping others.

It’s impossible to think that a person visiting their store would not fall in love with their peanut brittle as it tastes simple amazing. Their ube jam on the other hand is smooth, light, not over-poweringly sweet and provides a brilliant lavender color. Even better, there is no artificial food coloring used. The jam is actually sold warm and the bottle still uncapped to give you a glimpse of its gooey and yummy content. Sellers even give you a short spiel on how long to wait before sealing it. So you can imagine hundreds of cars circling around Tagaytay with unsealed jars of yummy ube jam at the back of their car seats.

Good Shepherd has actually broadened their product line into offering guava jams, mango jams, orange marmalade, strawberry juice, sampaloc candies, guyabano candies, pickles and pickled relishes. The small store offers reasonable prices to their yummy list of goodies as well. Ube jam cost 160 pesos, sugar-coated ube dimples cost 70 pesos while a bottle of Tawilis in olive oil cost 80 pesos.

The Good Shepherd Sisters’ Store is located on a narrow valley near kilometer 61 of the Tagaytay highway. It’s about a kilometer away from the famed Picnic Grove. Watch out for a sign saying Maryridge that will point the way to the single-laned street of the store. Stop by Tagaytay’s famous pasalubong shop, the Good Shepherd Store, and come out with a bag full of yummy goodies.
